Herb Kimmel established OUTPOST RECORDS in July of 1954. His intention was to seek out and record jazz musicians who were playing a more hard edged straight ahead jazz in contrast to the trend established by Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker and the west coast cool movement. William Claxton and Will MacFarland joined Kimmel and Jazz:West Records was created under the umbrella of Aladdin Records who would handle distribution and promotion of Jazz:West releases.
